Part 1
Students will hand in the topic each one has chosen for the paper. The topic should be something that is of interest to the student, so s/he can explore it more in depth. The topic also needs to be something that can be researched and that has scholarly articles written about it. (This involves some research, you cannot simply sit down and write what your topic will be, you need to do a little bit of research to see if it is narrow enough and if there are enough materials to support your writing)
If you are having trouble thinking of a topic, reflect on the material that will be covered in the course, and see if it gives you any ideas:
-Brief History/Dialects of American English
-System of government, separation of church and state
-The Ingredients of the Melting Pot/History of Immigration—Immigration trends
-Race, Ethnicity and Class
-The education system
-Life Cycle, Family and Gender
-Economics/Consumerism
-Mass Media/Popular culture/Social Media
-US impact in the globalized world.
The rubric for the paper can be found here.
